Swamp-cooler work, season by season

Rooftop and window coolers, and the switch to refrigerated air. Each visit ends with a written note of what we found and did.

  • Spring start-up

The visit that gets the cooler ready before the hot week.

    • Pads checked and changed if they are stained or crumbling

    • Pump, float valve, belt and motor tested

    • Water line and drain opened and checked

    • Cooler run while we are there

  • Fall shut-down

The visit that keeps winter from cracking the pan or the line.

    • Pan and line drained, water supply shut off

    • Scale and sediment cleaned out

    • Unit covered and the roof opening sealed against drafts

  • Repairs

The usual causes when a cooler stops cooling.

    • Pumps, motors, belts and bearings

    • Float valves, water lines and leaking pans

    • Pads, frames and rusted panels

  • Cooler installs

New and replacement units, on the roof or in a window.

    • Level mounting and a sealed roof jack

    • Water line, drain and electrical connection

    • A walk-through of the controls and the open-window rule

  • Ducts and vents

The air path from the cooler to the rooms.

    • Loose or torn duct runs repaired

    • Roof jacks and ceiling grilles resealed

    • Relief vents checked so air can leave the house

  • Switch to refrigerated air

A planned conversion, with a written scope.

    • Load calculation for your house, not a rule of thumb

    • Duct check, roof opening and electrical plan

    • Permit handled where the job needs one
